Frequently asked questions

Do members have to give each other rep before it works?

No. Scoring is automatic and passive. The largest component (Quality) comes from the messages themselves, so people earn reputation just by contributing well — endorsements and reactions add to the score but are never required to start.

When I add the bot, does it score everyone right away?

It scores everyone after an admin completes the setup wizard. At that point dcRep backfills roughly the last 30 days of public history and gives each active member a starting score. Before setup is finished, nothing is scored. See Add dcRep to your server.

Does dcRep read private messages?

Never. It only reads public activity in channels the bot can access on servers where it’s installed. See Privacy & your data.

Can the score be gamed?

It’s actively defended. A dedicated engine detects reaction trading, endorsement rings, sybil accounts, spam, duplication, flooding, and moderator abuse, and discounts or penalizes them. See Fairness & anti-gaming.

Why did my score go down even though I didn’t do anything?

That’s decay. After about two weeks of inactivity, scores drift down gently to reflect current standing. Turn on /vacation before a planned break to pause it.

I think a penalty was a mistake — what can I do?

Run /appeal with your reasoning. A moderator reviews it, and reversible penalties are undone if the appeal succeeds.

Is dcRep free?

There’s a free tier that covers core scoring for smaller servers. Larger communities and advanced configuration are on paid plans — see Plans & limits.

Can I leave and keep my reputation?

Yes. Leaving a server preserves your standing in case you come back. Data is only fully removed if dcRep is removed from the server or you request deletion.
